Personalized pinstripes are not a new fashion experiment. Research into historical press reports reveals examples involving presidents, political leaders, champion athletes and other prominent personalities.
Narendra Modi — Prime Minister of India
One of the world's most widely reported examples appeared in 2015, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wore a dark bandhgala-style suit during the visit of U.S. President Barack Obama.
From a distance, the fabric appeared to have conventional fine pinstripes. Closer photographs revealed something very different.
The stripes were formed by the repeated words:
“NARENDRA DAMODARDAS MODI”
The personalization attracted international media attention and turned the suit into perhaps one of the best-known modern examples of name-based pinstripe clothing. Contemporary reporting described the lettering as being incorporated into the fabric rather than simply appearing as an ordinary surface decoration.

Hosni Mubarak — Former President of Egypt
Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was another prominent political figure associated with personalized name pinstripes.
His suit appeared, from a distance, to be conventionally striped. On closer inspection, the stripes repeatedly displayed his name as “HOSNY MUBARAK.”
Mubarak's example predates the international attention surrounding Modi's suit and demonstrates that personalized pinstripe suiting had already reached the wardrobes of heads of state.

Carlos Menem — Former President of Argentina
The history goes back even further.
Former Argentine President Carlos Menem was reported as owning a personalized pinstripe suit as far back as the 1990s. A later Guardian account refers to a 1999 Fortune report mentioning Menem's personalized pinstripe suit.
This is important because it shows that the idea of turning a person's identity into the stripe of a luxury suit existed well before today's social-media era.

Evander Holyfield — World Heavyweight Boxing Champion
Personalized pinstripes have also appeared prominently in professional sport.
Boxing legend Evander Holyfield reportedly owned several personalized suits carrying different wording, including his own name and phrases celebrating his championship status.
Reported examples included:

and other championship-related messages.

George P. Shultz — Former U.S. Secretary of State
Former U.S. Secretary of State George P. Shultz provides another fascinating example.
The Washington Post reported in 2007 that Shultz appeared at an event wearing an elegant suit whose vertical stripes discreetly spelled:
“George Shultz.”
The personalization was subtle enough that it could easily be mistaken for an ordinary pinstripe unless viewed from close range.
That subtlety is one of the most appealing characteristics of name-based pinstripe cloth.

Conor McGregor — When Words Became the Pinstripe
One of the boldest modern interpretations was worn by UFC superstar Conor McGregor during the promotional tour for his 2017 fight against Floyd Mayweather.
His navy suit initially appeared to feature a chalk-stripe pattern.
The stripes were actually repeatedly formed from the provocative words:
“F* YOU.”
More importantly from a textile perspective, designer David August Heil explained that this was custom woven fabric. He specifically clarified that the wording was incorporated during the weaving process rather than subsequently screen-printed onto the finished cloth. The fabric was produced in Super 130s wool.
McGregor's suit demonstrates that personalized woven stripes do not have to contain a person's name. They can carry a statement, motto, identity or message.

Ken Griffey Jr. — A Suit Celebrating a Historic Achievement
Baseball legend Ken Griffey Jr. took another approach for his 2016 Baseball Hall of Fame induction.
His suit appeared to be pinstriped, but the stripes spelled:
“Hall of Fame Class of 2016.”
The suit therefore commemorated one of the most important achievements of his career directly through its stripe design.
This illustrates another possibility for personalized suiting: the fabric can commemorate an achievement, anniversary, wedding, institution or important event rather than simply displaying a name.

These famous examples were not isolated experiments.
In 2007, the Tom James Company announced a Signature Collection using Holland & Sherry fabrics. Customers could personalize suit pinstripes with family names, company mottos and, in some circumstances, logos.
